Twitter is not the most popular application in Russia, with barely more than 100,000 users. For some time, there has been a Twitter profile for the President, Medvedev. People thought that it was real.
Turns out, it wasn’t. Much to the chagrin of the Russian government when the discovered that the profile was speaking on behalf of the President to over 10,000 followers. That or course is a large percentage of the Russian population on Twitter.
The account has now been suspended, with the administration slightly red-faced over the time it took to discover the profile, and some of the things that it had said during its life over the accounts more than 1300 tweets.
The Russian government appears to have plans to being opening Western social media presences in the coming months.
It’s a good rule, if you are an important person, check around to see if you are being impersonated. You probably are. And of course, just like getting tested for herpes, get verified if you can. That is the real sign of success on Twitter.
